EnviroSim Releases BioWin 4.1

EnviroSim Associates announces the release of BioWin 4.1. Building on the successful history of the BioWin line, BioWin 4.1 continues to provide rigorous mathematical models to simulate operations in wastewater treatment plants.

Key additions to BioWin are a Thermal Hydrolysis Unit, a Submerged Aerated Filter and a Sidestream Media Bioreactor.

A thermal hydrolysis (TH) element has been added to simulate the breakdown of particulate components in a sludge stream generally into various soluble components. The TH unit is a dimensionless mass balance converter that instantaneously converts the particulate state variables into predefined sets of other state variables, and the user defines the extent of conversion and the fractional distribution between ‘products’ of hydrolysis. This highly flexible flowsheet element allows BioWin users to simulate a variety of sludge pretreatment technologies such as ozonation, sonication and chemical oxidation.

BioWin Advantage Volume 3 (Number 2)  illustrates application of the new thermal hydrolysis unit.

Enhancements have been implemented in a number of existing elements in BioWin. In primary settling tanks and cyclones it is now possible to specify individual removal percentages for particulate state variables. This enables users to model behavior such as additional removal of inert suspended solids to simulate a changing VSS/TSS ratio across a primary settling tank, and retention of anaerobic ammonia oxidizers in mainstream deammonification systems.

Several usability improvements have been included in BioWin 4.1. For example, any notes added with BioWin’s internal Notes Editor are now saved internally
to the BioWin file (as opposed to a separate “*.nts” file in previous versions). If notes have been added to a file, BioWin automatically displays these when the file is opened. This greatly improves the utility of the Notes Editor and facilitates knowledge transfer.

A more comprehensive description of the upgrade may be found in a “New Developments in BioWin” document for BioWin 4.1 in PDF format. These will help to get you started in BioWin 4.1; more comprehensive information is provided in the user manual.

  1. The upgrade to 4.1 will not affect older BioWin versions (BioWin 4.0 and earlier) which are separate applications. This means that users can keep their older copies of BioWin.
  2. BioWin Updater will not automatically upgrade BioWin 4.0 to BioWin 4.1. You MUST run the full installation from the link provided. Thereafter the BioWin Updater will always be checking that your files are up to date.
  3. We are emailing the registered contact for specific BioWin serial number(s). If an organization has multiple copies or users of BioWin, we would be pleased if the registered contact can advise other users of this new version and these upgrade instructions.

Annual License Customers : Annual License customers can now upgrade to BioWin 4.1; releases and upgrades are included in the Annual License and distributed electronically. Instructions on how to electronically upgrade to BioWin 4.1 can be found here.

Perpetual License Customers : Perpetual License customers who acquired BioWin after July 1, 2013 will be emailed instructions on how to electronically upgrade to BioWin 4.1 free of charge. If you have not received your upgrade email, please contact us. Customers who acquired BioWin prior to July 1, 2013 may order an upgrade here.

Academic Licenses : Academic Licenses can now be upgraded to BioWin 4.1; releases and upgrades are included in the annually renewed license and distributed electronically. Instructions on how to electronically upgrade to BioWin 4.1 can be found here.

Enjoy your new BioWin 4.1 and good modeling.
